17th December was a very significant date for Baxter College’s CCF as it was the focus of an inspection parade; the awarding of berets to the cadets and our regimental dinner. Our nervous but determined cadets performed excellently during the inspection which resulted in many complimentary comments from Colonel Sarling, Major Cuthbert and Captain Rees. Each cadet came forwards to be presented with their beret before returning to their position in the unit. Once they were used to the positioning of the head dress they all looked very smart and very much deserved the honour of wearing one.
Our first promotion took place following the awarding of the berets. Cadet Falcon was called forward and promoted to the rank of Lance Bombardier as a result of her experience and high levels of performance in all areas of Cadet activities. We are very fortunate to have such a good role model within the group at such an early stage of the unit’s development.
The highlight of the evening was the formal dinner which took place in the lower 6th form. Each cadet took their position at the table behind their name card and an array of highly polished silverware and candles. The invited military guests joined us along with Mr Carpenter and Mrs Weaver. We enjoyed a three course Christmas meal, with the staff serving the cadets their food and drink throughout. It was a wonderful opportunity to share a meal together in impressive surroundings and mark the end of our first term as a CCF unit. The cadets conducted themselves admirably with table manners and polite conversation being displayed and enjoyed throughout the meal.
I would like to thank Mr Deakin and Mr Cruikshanks for their regular support for Baxter CCF. My thanks also go to RSMI Cairney who has worked tirelessly to make the formal dinner the success it was and also the other aspects of cadet life he makes possible.
